Pick n Pay has opened its new flagship store in Somerset West, Cape Town, this will be the model for what customers can expect from all future refurbished Pick n Pay stores.

The Waterstone Store was a three-month refurbishment project by the team, installing new features and a new look and feel to the group’s ‘premium’ brand image.

This follows a decision made earlier this year to split the Pick n Pay store category into two brands:

Pick n Pay QualiSave was launched in August, targeting the middle-market of country. Meanwhile, the improved Pick n Pay format focuses on more affluent customers.

The new ‘premium’ Pick n Pay stores have new coffee bars, fresh produce, neat and creative product displays and wider aisles. These premium stores are also now home to the company’s new luxury private label, Crafted Collection by PnP, with more products and services expected to launch in the coming months.

According to Pick n Pay, most of the store’s signage has been converted to digital displays and features an interactive display to help customers pair wine with a variety of cheeses.

New equipment in the store also aims to reduce energy consumption by about 30%, such as installing energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration systems.

Loyalty to Nature products are also stocked in select stores to complement Pick n Pay’s growing Live Well line of health products. In keeping with the premium experience, all store employees undergo intensive training, and this extends to hiring the services of industry professionals, the team said.

The group has announced that it is accelerating its refurbishment program and the company aims to fully refurbish 130 Pick n Pay and QualiSave stores by February 2023, including new or proprietary, such as seedless passion fruit watermelon.

The Children’s Free Fruits Initiative provides kids with a healthy snack while their parents shop. Apples, sweet citrus, and bananas are currently on offer, but these vary depending on the season.
